Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Our thoughts determine our feelings and our behavior. For those on The Spectrum, negative and unrealistic thoughts often cause distress and result in even more problems for the entire family. For over 10 years FACT has successfully used Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help families change everyday negative or unrealistic thought patterns, no matter how rigid they may be.

COGNITION + EMOTION + BEHAVIOR = CBT

CBT is based on the idea of how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion), and how we act (behavior), all interact together.

CBT is a broad reaching and flexible therapy with numerous therapeutic techniques customized to clients and individual issues. The most common interventions will include:

  • Keeping a diary of significant events and associated feelings, thoughts and behaviors
  • Questioning and testing assumptions or habits thought to be unhelpful or unrealistic
  • Gradually facing activities which previously had been avoided
  • Trying out new ways of behaving and responding
  • Employing new relaxation and distraction techniques
