Family Support Groups
Quality Therapies for up to 1/3 the Cost of Other Private Alternatives
A child diagnosed with special needs often changes family relationships and dynamics, adding stress at each stage of development. FACT’s Support Services are geared to support both individuals and their families achieve the highest quality of life.
FACT’s focus is not concentrated on “fixing” dysfunctional families. Rather, it concentrates on empowering family members with new coping skills and providing a safe place to work out conflicts. To achieve maximum benefit, two separate groups are run simultaneously.
Children and Siblings Group
FACT Social Skills Groups are designed to organically develop social thinking, emotional intelligence, play and friendship. Children are helped to learn to “read” a social situation and adjust their “pace” in coordination with others. Activities vary depending on the makeup of the group, and the development and style of communication of its members.
Siblings are included in order to allow them a chance to participate in a family based activity, rather than sitting in a waiting room while their brother or sister participates in therapies they perceive as fun. Siblings also have the opportunity to interact with other children with autism to gain a wider perspective as well as a chance to meet other siblings.
Parent Support Groups
FACT Parent Support groups deal with the common issues the family is facing at each developmental stage. Parents are given specific feedback as to what their child has learned in the group and ways to generalize this to home and community.
